Quick verdict: worth it for repeated messes
Buy the HydroSteam if you regularly tackle sticky food stains on water-cleanable upholstery and will actually use its steam options. Its appeal is having spray, brushing, extraction and steam in one machine. For an occasional spill, a simpler Little Green may be enough.
The catch: steam is not proof of better cleaning on every stain. The machine is also heavier than a small grab-and-go cleaner, and your couch’s care label matters more than its marketing.
This review covers the US BISSELL Little Green HydroSteam 3618, not the CrossWave or Revolution upright. Decively has not physically tested it; the verdict combines manufacturer documentation and attributed independent testing.

Can you use HydroSteam on your couch?
Illustrative care-label guide. Water-cleanable does not automatically mean heat-safe; follow the furniture manufacturer’s instructions.
BISSELL’s support guide permits upholstery tagged W or WS. It says not to proceed with S or “Dry Clean Only”; if the tag is missing, check with the furniture dealer. These codes concern cleaning method, not a guarantee that every dye or fabric tolerates heat.
Check the couch maker’s heat restrictions and test an inconspicuous area first. Do not assume the cleaner is suitable for leather, delicate fabric or an unlabelled sofa. A machine that is excellent on carpet can still be the wrong purchase for your upholstery.
Does steam actually remove more stains?
Published Vacuum Wars results, using the respective cleaning formulas. The difference is small, and this carpet test does not predict every couch or stain.
In its 2025 dried grape-juice carpet test, Vacuum Wars measured 86.85% stain reduction for HydroSteam and 87.08% for Little Green Pro. The researchers used a colorimeter after the carpet dried. HydroSteam performed well, but steam did not give it a clear advantage in that test.
Hands-on accounts are more enthusiastic about particular messes. Tom Shelton at Just A Dad reported lifting jelly, chocolate syrup and ketchup with the 3618. Caroline Mullen at Apartment Therapy found she needed fewer passes on her rug and couch than with her older Little Green.
Our reading: steam adds a useful option for suitable sticky or oily messes, rather than a universal upgrade in stain removal. Different stains, fabrics, formulas and methods explain why demonstrations can look better than a controlled comparison. Neither proves every old mark will disappear.
Pick the mode for the mess
| Mode | Best starting point | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| SteamWash | Sticky or oily food messes | Fabric tolerates water and heat |
| Wash | Everyday stains and pet accidents | Water-cleaning permission |
| Steam | Refreshing suitable upholstery | Heat permission; not a dry-cleaning mode |
BISSELL’s launch guidance separates the modes by job. Pet accidents are not a reason to automatically select the hottest setting.
Drying time, reach and cleanup: the real compromises
Do not plan around a guaranteed 25-minute dry time. BISSELL’s claim applies to Steam Mode on new polyester, with a results-may-vary qualification. A soaked cushion or deeper wash is a different job. Extract thoroughly, allow airflow and wait until the fabric is dry before use.
Official specifications list 13 lb of machine weight, a 15 ft cord and a 4.8 ft hose. That is manageable for moving between spots, but expect to reposition the unit around a sectional. It is a portable spot cleaner, not the quickest tool for washing every square foot of a large room.
Vacuum loose hair and debris first. After spraying and gentle brushing, make slow extraction passes without adding more liquid. Empty and rinse the dirty tank after the job. Tom Shelton also flagged manual hose rinsing on his 3618: do not assume a HydroRinse attachment is in every box.
For everyday floor debris rather than couch stains, see our robot-vacuum buying guide; it explains a different cleaning job.
HydroSteam vs Little Green: which should you buy?
Choose HydroSteam when frequent, suitable food messes make its steam options useful, and you have space to store and clean a larger portable machine. It makes more sense when the current premium over a no-steam model is modest.
Choose a simpler Little Green when you mainly want to extract occasional spills and will rarely use steam. Little Green Pro’s close result in the cited test is a reason to compare the price gap—not proof that every no-steam model performs identically.
Skip both for an incompatible couch. Also check the power supply: the US 3618 is a 120V appliance. Buyers in 230V markets should choose an appropriate local-voltage model; a plug adapter does not convert voltage. Review local model specifications and warranty rather than assuming they match the US version.
Before ordering, confirm “BISSELL Little Green HydroSteam 3618,” the included tools and return terms. Regional Amazon matching can send the supplied link to another product.

A few questions before buying
Is Little Green HydroSteam a vacuum cleaner?
It extracts liquid during spot cleaning; it is not a substitute for dry vacuuming hair and crumbs. Clear loose debris before using it.
Will it remove old couch stains?
It may help, but the stain, fabric and previous treatments matter. The independent carpet test supports capable cleaning—not guaranteed removal from every sofa.
Does it sanitize a couch?
This review makes no upholstery-disinfection claim. Removing visible dirt is different from proving a specific germ-reduction result.
