The original Bose QC Ultra is worth considering if you want comfortable headphones with strong noise cancellation for work and travel. The key is finding it at a convincing saving over the newer model.
This review covers the 2023 over-ear headphones, not the earbuds or 2nd Gen. For the wider shortlist, see our Sony XM5 vs Bose QC Ultra vs AirPods Max comparison.

The quick verdict
Buy for: comfort, noise cancellation and a folding travel design.
Think twice if: you need USB-C audio, wired playback with a dead battery, or headphones mainly for calls.
Our view: the original makes most sense at a substantial discount. If the 2nd Gen costs only a little more, compare its extra features before choosing.

Comfort and noise cancellation: the main attraction
SoundGuys reports a weight of about 253 g and soft padding that works well with thin glasses frames. Fit is personal, so try them with your own glasses and check for pressure during a longer session.
RTINGS finds a slight noise-isolation advantage over the Sony WH-1000XM5, alongside better comfort. That supports shortlisting Bose, but the difference is small: both can be sensible choices.
Quiet mode engages noise cancellation; Aware mode brings outside sound through. Bose also uses CustomTune to adapt the listening experience to your ears. Expect reduced distraction, not complete silence: nearby conversation can still be audible.
The headphones fold for storage, but they have no official water-resistance rating. They suit a desk or travel bag better than a sweaty workout.

Sound: enjoyable, with an optional spatial effect
What Hi-Fi? praises the original Ultra’s engaging sound and effective ANC, while finding Immersive Audio inconsistent. The Bose app provides a simple bass, midrange and treble equalizer.
Try ordinary stereo first. Immersive Audio changes the presentation; it is not an automatic improvement. If you prefer stereo, you also avoid the extra battery drain.
Controls combine physical buttons with a touch-sensitive volume strip. That is a useful middle ground if you prefer a definite playback button to an earcup covered in gestures.
The connection limitations you should know
Multipoint works: Bose added two-device Bluetooth connectivity in July 2024, so update the headphones through the Bose app. Old launch reviews may describe a limitation that has since been fixed.
USB-C audio does not: on the original model, that port is for charging. Wired listening uses the analogue cable, and the headphones still need to be powered on. A dead battery means the cable will not rescue your listening session. These details are confirmed in Bose’s product FAQs and owner’s guide.
For frequent meetings, listen to the microphone samples in SoundGuys’ review before buying. Strong ANC for you does not automatically mean a clearer microphone for the person on the call. Test with your actual meeting app during the return period.
Battery life: 24 hours, with a trade-off
Bose claims up to 24 hours with Immersive Audio off, or 18 hours with it on. Those are manufacturer figures, not our measurements.
SoundGuys recorded 27 hours and 37 minutes in its continuous-playback test. Your mix of volume, calls and listening modes may produce a different result.
For a long trip, charge before leaving and turn off Immersive Audio when endurance matters. Remember that analogue listening also requires battery power.

Original or 2nd Gen: which should you buy?
Bose’s second-generation announcement adds USB-C audio, up to 30 hours with noise cancellation and Cinema Mode. Those specifications do not apply to the original reviewed here.
Choose the original when it is meaningfully cheaper and you mainly listen over Bluetooth. Consider the 2nd Gen when the price gap is small or USB-C listening would solve a regular problem.
Compare like-for-like offers: new versus new, or refurbished versus refurbished, with similar warranty and return terms. For a used pair, check the cushions, hinges and included cables. A low price is less attractive if replacements are immediately needed.

Our verdict
The original QC Ultra remains a credible choice for quieter work and comfortable travel. Buy it for those daily benefits, at the right price—not just the Ultra name.
