The Sony WF-1000XM6 improve an already capable pair of noise-canceling earbuds. Whether that improvement is worth paying for depends on what bothers you about the WF-1000XM5: engine noise, calls, fit—or simply the feeling that a newer model must be better.
Quick verdict: upgrade or save?
Already own a comfortable, healthy XM5? Keep it unless noisy calls or low-frequency rumble regularly frustrate you. Buying fresh? Choose XM6 when the price gap is modest; choose XM5 when the saving is substantial and the smaller body fits you better. Battery life is effectively a draw, and several software features are shared after updates.

Sony WF-1000XM6 vs WF-1000XM5 at a glance
| Buying priority | XM6 versus XM5 |
|---|---|
| Noise cancellation | XM6 has the stronger independent evidence for reducing low-frequency rumble. Fit still affects the result. |
| Calls | XM6 generally improves voice pickup; reviewers disagree on how large the benefit is. |
| Fit and weight | XM6: about 6.5g per bud. XM5: about 5.9g. The XM6 body and case are bulkier. |
| Official ANC battery claim | Both: up to 8 hours per charge and 24 hours including the case. |
| Shared essentials | Both: USB-C and Qi case charging, multipoint, AAC/LDAC support, app EQ and IPX4 earbuds. |
ANC and calls: the main reasons to upgrade
Sony claims a 25% further noise reduction for XM6 under its own test conditions. That is a manufacturer comparison, not a promise that every journey becomes 25% quieter.
SoundGuys found the clearest ANC gain below 400Hz, useful for engine rumble, while its overall attenuation difference was much smaller. RTINGS also found improved low-frequency cancellation. What Hi-Fi? heard a broader improvement, especially in the mids and highs. The direction is consistent; the size and frequency range of the benefit vary by test and seal.
For calls, What Hi-Fi? heard only a small clarity improvement. SoundGuys was more positive about wind handling; RTINGS found clearer pickup but warned that very loud background sounds can obscure the voice. SoundGuys also labels its voice-vibration sensor testing experimental. Choose XM6 if calls are a current weakness, rather than expecting flawless speech in every environment.
Fit first: a better seal can outweigh new hardware
Generic fitting illustration, not a photograph of Sony accessories or a noise-cancellation test. Follow the fitting guidance for your earbuds.
The XM6 redesign is not automatically more comfortable. SoundGuys preferred the new fit, but RTINGS warns that the bulkier buds can work loose in smaller ears. A lighter, closer-fitting XM5 may be the better everyday choice for you.
Try the supplied tip sizes and Sony’s in-app fit check. Sony advises lightly squeezing the foam tips if insertion is difficult. A comfortable seal matters to bass and ANC; do not compensate for a poor fit by choosing the most expensive model.
Battery life: nine minutes is not an upgrade
| Evidence | WF-1000XM6 / WF-1000XM5 |
|---|---|
| Sony claim, ANC on | Up to 8 hours / up to 8 hours per charge. |
| Sony claim, including case | Up to 24 hours / up to 24 hours total. |
| SoundGuys standardized test | 9 hours 41 minutes / 9 hours 32 minutes. |
| Practical decision | Treat the nine-minute test difference as a draw. |
SoundGuys tested with ANC enabled and music peaks around 75dB SPL. Its own battery analysis treats the small gap as within potential sample variation. These are test outcomes, not guaranteed daily runtimes: codec, volume, extra processing and battery age change the result.
An aging XM5 may last less than a new review sample, but that is a condition issue—not evidence of a major generational battery gain. Both cases support Qi charging; switching models does not unlock that convenience.
Sound and software: more shared than you might expect
What Hi-Fi? preferred XM6’s warmer, fuller presentation. SoundGuys measured broadly similar tuning with changes in the highs. Those are different assessments, so treat sound as a preference rather than an automatic reason to replace an XM5 you already enjoy.
Both work with Android and iPhone through Sound Connect and support two-device multipoint. LDAC needs a compatible Android device; iPhones use AAC, so buying XM6 does not unlock LDAC on iOS.
Update the XM5 before judging its feature list. Sony’s firmware notes already include Gemini Live, Audio Sharing with Fast Pair and additions to Scene-based Listening. Phone, software, region and service requirements still apply; these are not blanket XM6 exclusives.
Buy the XM6—or keep your XM5?
Choose WF-1000XM6 if travel noise and outdoor calls matter often, its fit works for you, and the current premium is modest. The hardware improvements have independent support; battery life is not the selling point.
When the XM5 is the smarter buy
Choose WF-1000XM5 when it costs substantially less, you prefer its smaller shape, or you already own a pair that fits well and lasts long enough. If the prices are close, the newer hardware is easier to justify. Compare equivalent condition, seller warranty and return options before deciding.

Questions before you order
Is XM6 worth upgrading to from XM5? Mostly when it addresses a recurring ANC or call problem. Comfortable XM5 owners do not get a meaningful battery upgrade.
Are both water-resistant? The earbuds are IPX4 splash-resistant, not designed for swimming. Keep the charging case dry.
