Some people want their earbuds to disappear into the background. Others want the background to disappear. That is the most useful way to approach AirPods 5 vs AirPods Pro 3: start with the fit and the places you listen, then decide how much to spend.

Quick answer: choose AirPods 5 if you dislike silicone tips and want an open fit with noise cancellation. Choose AirPods Pro 3 if quieter journeys, longer listening sessions and adjustable ear tips matter more. Paying for Pro makes little sense if you find a sealed fit uncomfortable.

Scope: the main comparison uses AirPods 5 with Wireless Charging Case, the version in our Amazon link—not the cheaper USB-C-only model. Decively has not hands-on tested either pair. We researched Apple’s documentation and attributed firsthand reviews, checked on 1 October 2026. Affiliate disclosure.

Start with the fit you can actually live with

AirPods 5 sit in your ears without silicone tips. Pro 3 use replaceable tips to form a seal. Neither approach is automatically more comfortable: a rigid open-fit shape can press against one person’s ear, while a sealed tip can bother someone else.

With the Pro 3, you can try different tip sizes. With AirPods 5, you cannot fix a poor fit by swapping to a smaller silicone tip. Our advice is to make the return policy part of the buying decision. A quick try-on is useful; a comfortable fit after a longer session is better evidence.

If you already know that unsealed AirPods suit your ears, the AirPods 5 deserve a place on the shortlist. If previous open-fit pairs fell out or sounded thin, do not assume another generation will solve that for you.

Two reviewers, two different comfort experiences

SoundGuys: discomfort after longer wear

SoundGuys’ firsthand review reports that the AirPods 5 initially felt secure, but the housing began rubbing after roughly half an hour. Its reviewers also stress that fit affects bass and noise cancellation. That is a reason to try the shape—not proof that everyone will find it uncomfortable.

Tom’s Guide: comfortable through extended use

Tom’s Guide’s reviewer describes wearing the wireless-case model for around six hours without pain and prefers its lack of silicone tips. The contrasting experiences show why an average review score cannot tell you whether a particular earbud shape will suit your ears.

These are other publications’ firsthand observations. They are not Decively test results or testimonials collected from our readers.

Open-fit ANC can help. A seal still changes the decision.

Both AirPods 5 versions have ANC. The more expensive wireless-case version does not buy you a separate class of noise cancellation. Its extra benefits are charging, controls and battery life. Apple’s launch announcement claims an improvement over AirPods 4 with ANC; that comparison should not be read as a promise to match the Pro 3.

SoundGuys found that AirPods 5 still let low-frequency engine and aircraft rumble through, despite useful cancellation for an unsealed design. For our shortlist, that makes Pro 3 the stronger starting point for frequent flights and noisy commutes, provided you get a good seal.

For shorter listening sessions, you may value the AirPods 5’s unsealed feel more than maximum isolation. Neither model guarantees silence, and our recommendation does not turn a manufacturer’s ANC comparison into a measured Decively result.

Battery life: the difference you may notice on a journey

AirPods Pro 3 — up to 8 hours with ANC

AirPods 5 Wireless Charging Case — up to 5 hours with ANC

Apple’s maximum single-charge listening estimates, ANC enabled, on a shared eight-hour scale. Real-world runtime varies with volume, settings and battery condition. Sources: AirPods 5 / Pro 3.

Single-session battery matters more than a case headline

The Pro 3’s rated eight-hour ANC listening time gives them more room for a long session than the wireless-case AirPods 5’s five hours. The gap in the total including the case is smaller: 24 versus 22 hours. The case cannot recharge the earbuds while you are wearing them.

For several short sessions, that case total may be enough. For a long journey or a meeting-heavy day, avoiding a mid-session recharge may justify the Pro 3. These are planning estimates, not guarantees that either pair will last exactly that long.

If you are considering the standard AirPods 5 instead, Apple rates that model at four hours with ANC and 20 hours including its case. It also lacks volume swipe and wireless charging. Our AirPods 5 buying guide covers that separate version-to-version decision.

What the Pro model adds—and what it does not

Pro 3 add heart-rate sensing for workouts. If you exercise with an iPhone and want that information without relying on a watch, it is a feature worth investigating. If your watch already does what you need, it may not be a compelling reason to pay more.

Apple also lists Hearing Test and Hearing Aid features for the Pro 3, subject to eligibility and regional availability. AirPods 5 do not offer the same set. Check the requirements for the specific feature you intend to use before making it the reason for a purchase.

Live Translation is shared. Apple’s support page includes both AirPods 5 and Pro 3, with a compatible Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, current firmware and the required software. Language and regional availability matter. Choosing Pro does not, by itself, unlock translation on an incompatible phone.

Both use the H2 headphone chip and offer Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness. There is no reason to treat a shared chip name as proof that fit, isolation or battery life will feel identical.

Check the actual saving before choosing the cheaper pair

Start by comparing the exact models rather than the lowest headline price. Our AirPods 5 link selects the Wireless Charging Case version. Verify that selection, the seller, condition and return terms on the product page before checking out.

We have not copied a temporary Amazon price into this guide or labelled either link the cheapest offer. A sale can narrow the gap; different delivery charges can widen it. For international readers, US-store prices may exclude the shipping, import charges or local warranty considerations that matter to your purchase.

The AirPods 5 are our value-first starting point for someone who knows they prefer an open fit. Pro 3 are the stronger choice when isolation and uninterrupted listening justify the extra spend. A discounted product that fits badly is still a poor purchase.

AirPods 5 vs AirPods Pro 3: common questions

Do both AirPods 5 versions have ANC?

Yes. The Wireless Charging Case version adds wireless charging, volume swipe and longer rated battery life; ANC is also available on the standard model.

Are AirPods 5 better for people who dislike ear tips?

They are the more relevant starting point because they have no silicone tips. That does not guarantee comfort: their fixed shape still needs to suit your ears.

Can I use either pair with Android?

Both can work as Bluetooth headphones, but Apple warns that non-Apple functionality may be limited. Compare Android-friendly options if you would not use the iPhone-specific features.
