A new pair of headphones does not have to reinvent the commute. Sometimes the useful upgrade is a familiar design, a sensible price and fewer reasons to leave the carrying case at home.
Sony’s WH-1000XM4C brings its folding XM4 design back into the conversation. The real question is whether this refresh earns your money when the original XM4 still works—or an XM5 costs about the same.
Research checked: 2 October 2026. This is a buying guide based on Sony documentation and an attributed independent review. Decively has not hands-on tested the WH-1000XM4C. There are no affiliate purchase links in this article.

What exactly is the Sony WH-1000XM4C?
Announced on 7 September 2026, the WH-1000XM4C is a refresh of the WH-1000XM4. Sony also calls it “M4 2nd Gen” in North America. It is not the WH-1000XM6, and the letter C should not be read as the next flagship generation. Sony’s announcement makes that positioning clear.
Sony highlights revised sound tuning, a 10-band equaliser and refreshed colours. Those changes give you more adjustment and a different starting sound; they do not establish that everyone will prefer it. See the UK announcement.
That distinction matters in a shop full of similar names. Compare the complete model number on the box, the listing and the warranty information. A discounted original XM4 and a newly listed XM4C are different purchases.
XM4C vs original XM4: the useful differences
| Feature | WH-1000XM4C | WH-1000XM4 |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth | 6.0 | 5.0 |
| Audio codecs | SBC, AAC, LDAC | SBC, AAC, LDAC |
| Driver | 40mm | 40mm |
| ANC playback maximum | 27 hours; codec-dependent | 30 hours |
| ANC-off maximum | 34 hours; codec-dependent | 38 hours |
Manufacturer figures, not Decively measurements. Sources: WH-1000XM4C specifications and original WH-1000XM4 specifications. Battery maxima depend on settings; the codec distinction below is important.
The Bluetooth version is newer, but the listed codec names remain familiar. The battery headline is also lower than the original model’s maximum. This is why a refresh should be judged feature by feature, rather than treated as an automatic upgrade.
The folding design is the strongest everyday argument
The XM4C folds and Sony lists a carrying case in the box. Its stated weight is approximately 253g. Sony’s product page and specifications describe the travel essentials.
If your headphones share a bag with a laptop, lunch and a charger, packing shape can matter more than a feature you use once a month. Check the case against the space you actually have, rather than choosing from a picture of the headphones alone.
Comfort deserves its own return-window check. Wear them for a normal work session, with your glasses if you use them, and notice pressure, heat and the seal around your ears. Another person’s comfortable fit does not guarantee yours.
The 27-hour battery claim has an important catch
Sony’s operating-time guide separates battery estimates by codec and listening mode. With noise cancellation enabled, the maximum is 27 hours using AAC or SBC, but 20 hours using LDAC.
| Listening setting | Sony maximum |
|---|---|
| AAC/SBC, ANC on | 27 hours |
| LDAC, ANC on | 20 hours |
| AAC/SBC, ANC off | 34 hours |
| LDAC, ANC off | 27 hours |
These are manufacturer maximum playback figures, not measured results. Equaliser adjustments, DSEE Extreme, Speak-to-Chat and other settings can shorten them. Sony also quotes about an hour of playback from a three-minute charge.
Check your work setup before relying on multipoint
Sony lists multipoint connection, SBC/AAC/LDAC support and a stereo mini-jack input. Passive operation is also listed, allowing an analogue connection with the headphones switched off. Official specifications.
For work, map out the actual pair of devices: perhaps a phone and a company laptop. Check permitted app installation, the calling software you use and whether switching behaves as expected during your return period. A compatibility tick on a product page is a starting point.
Do not buy on the assumption that a future update will add a feature you need. This guide makes no promise of a future Auracast rollout. Bluetooth 6.0 by itself is not proof of a particular audio feature being available.
What an independent hands-on review found
SoundGuys’ review by Christian Thomas, published on 16 September 2026, reports five days with a manufacturer-provided unit. Thomas found the headphones comfortable for a four-hour session and described effective noise cancellation on his train commute.
The review also flagged weaker microphone performance with office noise and wind, plus the absence of a battery-care setting and Auracast. Its discussion notes connection-related microphone irregularities, so it is worth listening to the supplied call samples rather than relying on the short summary.
These are SoundGuys’ findings, not Decively’s experience. Its battery testing was still incomplete in the version consulted. We therefore use Sony’s clearly labelled estimates instead of presenting a lab-tested runtime.
The practical takeaway is simple: listening and calling are separate decisions. Strong noise cancellation around your ears does not, by itself, prove that the person on the other end of a meeting will hear you clearly.
Who should buy, compare or keep what they have?
Launch prices and regional availability
Sony’s North American announcement gives suggested prices of US$299.99 and C$429.99, with availability described as fall 2026. Its US lavender option is limited to Sony and Amazon. North American pricing and availability.
The UK announcement gives approximate launch prices of £219 and €279, and availability from September 2026. The euro figure is an announcement reference, not a guaranteed price in every European country. UK and European announcement.
Sony lists the model in its Australian headphone range, but we have not verified an official Australian price for this guide. Check the local product listing, seller and stock before ordering.
Those figures are not live offers. Shipping, tax treatment, colour, seller and warranty can change the comparison. Use a local delivered price whenever possible, and check what support applies if you import.
What if an XM5 costs about the same?
Read our Sony WH-1000XM5 review alongside this guide if the prices overlap. The worthwhile comparison is your routine: packing, call quality, comfort and the features you will actually use.
At a similar total price, do not let either the bigger model number or the more recent launch make the choice for you. Decide which compromise would annoy you daily. Then look for evidence about that exact compromise.

Before you buy: a short checklist
1. Check the full model number. The listing should say WH-1000XM4C, not simply XM4.
2. Compare delivered prices. Use the same country, tax basis and warranty expectations.
3. Choose your listening mode. Use the battery estimate for your codec and settings.
4. Listen to call samples. Especially if meetings are a major use.
5. Check returns. Give yourself a chance to assess fit and your actual devices.
The XM4C is interesting because a familiar folding design still answers a real need. It is a more convincing purchase when that need matches your day and the local price makes sense. If your existing headphones already do both, keeping them is a perfectly good decision.
Sony WH-1000XM4C: common questions
Is the WH-1000XM4C a replacement for the XM6?
No. Sony positions it as an XM4 refresh alongside other models in the range. Compare complete names rather than treating it as a new flagship.
Does LDAC provide the full 27-hour ANC estimate?
No. Sony lists up to 20 hours for LDAC with noise cancellation active, compared with up to 27 hours for AAC or SBC. See the codec-specific battery figures.
Has Decively tested these headphones?
No. This guide combines official documentation, an attributed external hands-on review and our buying analysis. It does not include Decively sound measurements or hands-on claims.
