Apple announced HomePod mini 2 on October 13, 2026. Preorders are open ahead of October 30 availability, but its most interesting assistant upgrade is not a launch-day feature.
Quick verdict
Consider it if you already use iPhone and Apple Home and need a compact speaker. Keep a working original mini if it already handles your music and routines. If conversational Siri is your main reason to upgrade, wait until Siri AI ships in your country and can be evaluated outside a launch demo.
What is announced—and what comes later?
| Detail | Buying implication |
|---|---|
| Retail availability | October 30, 2026 in announced launch markets; preorder availability is not immediate delivery. |
| Siri AI | A future software update. Apple has not given a release date in the inspected announcement. |
| Four-speaker surround | Requires Apple TV 4K (4th generation), current software and matching front/rear speaker pairs. |
| Mac default-speaker feature | Apple specifies a Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later. Check your Mac before making this the reason to buy. |
| Sound Glow | Music-responsive lighting. Voice control requires an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone on current software. |
Apple’s announced single-speaker prices are US $149, UK £149, Canada CA$199 and Australia A$229. Germany’s announcement lists €169 including VAT; that is not a universal European price. Check local availability and checkout terms. These are manufacturer launch prices, not Amazon offers.
Is the new setup worth the extra hardware?
Apple’s example uses two full-size HomePod (2nd generation) speakers at the front and two HomePod mini 2 speakers at the rear. The TV box and speakers are separate purchases. Image: Apple Newsroom.
A single speaker, a stereo pair and a four-speaker TV system are different purchases. For surround sound, Apple requires four compatible speakers arranged in matching pairs, plus its fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. Do not assume your original mini or older Apple TV meets that requirement.
TechRadar’s launch-event report described a favorable listening impression. That is useful early context, but it does not establish a measured sound-quality improvement over the original. We would wait for direct comparisons before replacing a satisfactory speaker for audio alone.
The hardware remains small: Apple lists an 84.3mm height, a full-range driver and two passive radiators, with an S10 chip handling computational audio. A faster processor is not proof that a compact speaker can replace a larger sound system. For a different TV-audio approach, see our Sonos Beam Ultra buying guide.
Check your country and Apple devices first
Apple’s initial Siri AI rollout list names English in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa. This is a future rollout list, not a promise that the feature works in those countries today.
The home’s owner needs an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad, current software and Siri AI enabled in a supported language. Personal-context requests have additional paired-device requirements. Apple says Siri AI will not initially be available in the EU on iPhone or iPad; buying or importing the speaker does not bypass that restriction.
For ordinary setup, Apple lists an iPhone or iPad on current software and Wi-Fi internet. Bluetooth 6 appears in the specification, but that does not make this a straightforward Android Bluetooth-speaker purchase.
Who should preorder—and who should wait?
Consider it for an Apple household
You need a new compact speaker, want Apple Home integration and would still buy it without the future Siri AI update. Check the local price and your existing devices first.
Wait if the promised assistant is the attraction
Keep your current speaker if it already works well. Wait for the rollout if you need EU availability, a particular language, proven audio gains or a complete test of the new assistant.
Our buying position: pay for the hardware and supported setup you can identify, and treat Siri AI as a future benefit until its release conditions are satisfied. One speaker is a much smaller commitment than rebuilding your TV system around four.
