Sony LinkBuds Clip and Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) both clip around the outside of your ear, leaving the ear canal open. The real decision is whether Sony’s listening controls or Bose’s charging and handling conveniences matter more to you. This comparison covers the 2026 Bose model, not the original Ultra Open.
Quick verdict: controls or charging?
Choose Sony when it is meaningfully cheaper and you want adjustable fitting cushions, detailed EQ and a mode that reduces sound leakage. Choose Bose when the price gap is small enough to justify physical buttons, wireless charging and its spatial listening modes. Neither has ANC: buy either for awareness and comfort, rather than blocking a noisy commute.

Sony LinkBuds Clip vs Bose Ultra Open 2 at a glance
| What matters | Sony LinkBuds Clip / Bose Ultra Open 2 |
|---|---|
| Fit | Sony: clip with fitting cushions. Bose: flexible cuff; individual ear shape still matters. |
| Listening controls | Sony: Standard, Voice Boost and Sound Leakage Reduction. Bose: Stereo, Immersion and Cinema. |
| Everyday handling | Sony: tap controls. Bose: physical buttons for playback, calls and volume. |
| Charging case | Sony: USB-C only. Bose: USB-C and wireless charging. |
| Phone connection | Both support Android, iPhone apps and two-device Bluetooth multipoint. |
| Water resistance | Both earbuds are IPX4 splash-resistant; neither is for swimming. |
Sound: open ears help in quiet places
Illustration of listening environments, not a product photograph or sound test. Open-ear designs let surrounding sound compete with playback.
Neither pair seals out your surroundings. That makes conversation easier at a desk, but trains and traffic compete with your music. Do not pay more for Bose expecting noise cancellation.
Sony’s Voice Boost emphasizes voices in the content you are playing; it is not microphone noise cancellation. Sound Leakage Reduction adjusts high frequencies to reduce what escapes. It does not make high-volume listening private.
SoundGuys’ Adam Birney found the second-generation Bose had fuller bass than the original and useful Cinema processing for dialogue. That is evidence of an upgrade over old Bose, not a controlled sound-quality win over Sony. Choose the sound presentation you prefer; neither recreates the isolation of sealed earbuds.
Comfort and controls: fit can overturn the verdict
Sony supplies Air Fitting Cushions to adjust how the clips sit. They help tailor fit, but tighter is not automatically more comfortable. Tom’s Guide reviewer Alex Bracetti reported pinching after about an hour; other reviewers were more comfortable. Ear shape makes a return option valuable.
Bose uses a flexible cuff with buttons you can find by feel. That is a practical advantage if tapping around the ear frustrates you. Sony lets you adjust tap sensitivity in Sound Connect. Check comfort alongside your glasses or earrings before committing to long daily sessions.
Battery life: official claims versus independent tests
| Evidence | Sony LinkBuds Clip / Bose Ultra Open 2 |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer claim: earbuds | Sony: up to 9 hours. Bose: up to 9 hours with Immersive Audio and Auto Volume off. |
| Manufacturer claim: with case | Sony: up to 37 hours total. Bose: up to 28.5 hours total in standard listening. |
| SoundGuys single-charge tests | Sony: 7 hours 10 minutes. Bose: 13 hours 1 minute. Separate standardized review tests, not Decively measurements. |
Sony’s larger advertised total does not prove a longer uninterrupted session. SoundGuys measured the opposite in its separate reviews. Those results are useful evidence, not guaranteed runtimes for every volume, firmware or listening mode.
Bose officially reduces its earbud estimate to five hours with either Immersive Audio or Auto Volume enabled, and four with both. Pick Bose for wireless case charging; pick Sony’s claimed case reserve only if you are happy topping up between sessions.
Calls, apps and phone compatibility
Both have companion apps on Android and iPhone and can connect to two devices at once. Sony offers a 10-band EQ; Bose uses three bands. Bose also supports aptX Adaptive on compatible Snapdragon Sound Android devices; iPhones use AAC, so that codec is not a reason to spend extra for iOS.
SoundGuys’ Christian Thomas reported good everyday Sony calls. Bose’s lab samples struggled with wind and noisy scenes, while Impulse Gamer reported generally clear real calls with occasional wind problems. SoundGuys warns its artificial head cannot properly activate the voice-vibration pickup used by these designs. There is no firm all-conditions call winner here.
Bose’s Auto Volume is optional. Birney found it sometimes raised volume too aggressively, so start with it off and adjust manually. Bose announced Find Hub, built-in Alexa+ and an Apple Music shortcut for a later firmware update; do not base your purchase on them without checking current firmware availability.
Which should you buy?
Buy Sony LinkBuds Clip if its current price is appreciably lower, you want more EQ control, or Sound Leakage Reduction suits a shared workspace. Its compromises are USB-C-only case charging and tap controls that may need adjustment.
When Bose is worth paying more for
Buy Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (2nd Gen) if physical buttons, wireless charging and Cinema/Immersion modes are features you will use regularly. The long SoundGuys battery result strengthens its case, but fit and your actual settings remain decisive. A large premium is harder to justify for occasional podcasts.

Quick questions before you order
Can people nearby hear my audio? Some leakage is possible with both, especially when volume rises in a quiet room. Sony’s reduction mode helps manage it; neither guarantees privacy.
Do these use bone conduction for music? No. They play sound from speakers outside the ear canal. Voice-vibration sensors used for calls are a different function.
Is this the original Bose Ultra Open? No: select the listing explicitly marked “2nd Gen.” Check your destination country, seller, warranty and return conditions; an Amazon.com link does not guarantee local delivery.
