Galaxy SmartTag3: Should You Wait—and Will It Work with Your Phone?

Samsung’s new tracker can work with iPhone, but the features are not identical. Here is what to check before waiting for SmartTag3 or replacing a tag you already own.

Galaxy SmartTag3’s biggest change is useful for households that mix Samsung phones and iPhones. But buying the same tracker does not give everyone the same finding tools.

This is a buying guide based on launch documentation and independent event hands-on impressions, not a Decively product test. Research checked: 10 October 2026.

Quick verdict: worth waiting for the right phone

Our recommendation is conditional: local stock, your exact phone and independent tracking tests matter more than a promising specification. For an Apple-focused alternative, read our AirTag 2 buying guide.

Does Galaxy SmartTag3 work with iPhone?

Phone compatibility: what the same tag does differently
PhoneBuying check
iPhoneLocation checking, sharing and Search Nearby; no Compass View, Ring Phone or Left Behind Alert.
Compatible GalaxyCompass View requires Android 12 or later plus UWB or Bluetooth Channel Sounding.
Other Android brandsDo not assume support. PhoneArena reports Samsung confirmed Galaxy and iOS support only.

Samsung’s US announcement supports basic finding and sharing through SmartThings Find on iOS. That is not Apple Find My integration or feature parity. Sharing a suitcase may be useful; expecting directional guidance or a left-behind warning on iPhone is a different purchase.

Bluetooth Channel Sounding is currently listed for Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, S26 Ultra and S26 Plus. Samsung says further support may come later. Do not buy for an unconfirmed future phone update. Sources: Samsung Canada compatibility footnotes; PhoneArena’s reported Samsung statement.

Finding luggage is not the same as live GPS tracking

Original Decively diagram. Location updates depend on nearby participating Galaxy devices.

Nearby, the tag uses Bluetooth and, with a compatible phone, precise-finding tools. Samsung’s up-to-60-metre Channel Sounding figure is an unobstructed line-of-sight claim; walls and interference can reduce it. It does not promise a 60-metre search radius with every phone. Beyond direct range, updates depend on nearby participating Galaxy devices. In an empty area, buying the tag does not create network coverage.

Samsung’s October 8 explainer describes movement notifications that rely on nearby opted-in Galaxy phones and may be delayed or absent. Place Notification is a trial feature, and displayed positions can differ from actual locations. Location History keeps up to seven days. Treat these as recovery aids, not guaranteed real-time security monitoring.

Decively’s interpretation: this suits misplaced keys or luggage recovery better than a job requiring continuous, independently connected location updates.

Battery life: a claim to check, not a result we measured

Samsung claims up to 550 days in standard use or 790 days in Power Saving Mode, using a replaceable CR2032. These are simulated internal-lab results from a pre-release device. Power saving removes some functions, including Compass View; the longer figure has a trade-off.

Samsung also says the tag is smaller and lighter than SmartTag2. In his September 30 event hands-on, Tom’s Guide’s Tony Polanco liked the compact design and smooth feel. That is evidence about handling, not a long-term battery or lost-luggage test. We found no completed independent long-duration battery test in the sources checked.

Before you buy

  • Confirm support for your exact phone and the features you actually want.
  • Check local stock, return terms and any case you need to attach it securely.
  • Wait for independent tracking measurements if reliability is your main reason to upgrade.

Our choice: keep a functioning tag while you confirm those three points. The strongest reason to change is a practical sharing or finding benefit—not the generation number.

A clearer choice starts with context.

Look at the evidence, weigh the compromises and choose for the job you need to do.
