Google Pixel Watch 5 vs Pixel Watch 4: Upgrade or Buy the Older Model?

The Pixel Watch 4 already has dual-frequency GPS and many newer health tools. Find out which Watch 5 improvements justify paying more, and which don't.

Google Pixel Watch 5 vs Pixel Watch 4 is a smaller upgrade than the launch headlines suggest. The 2026 model improves processing, storage and route tracking, but the older watch shares much of the everyday experience. This comparison uses two 45mm Wi-Fi models, not LTE versions.

Quick verdict: keep Watch 4 unless a specific upgrade matters

Buy Pixel Watch 5 for its newer processing, extra storage and improved route-recording approach when the price gap is modest. Buy Pixel Watch 4 when it is substantially cheaper: its screen, stated battery endurance and core health tools remain competitive.

Already own Watch 4? Keep it unless storage or route tracking is a genuine limitation. Breathing Emergency Detection alone is not a reason to upgrade; Google now supports it on both in eligible regions.

Pixel Watch 5 vs 4: the useful differences

Like-for-like 45mm Wi-Fi models; Google specifications and claims, not Decively test results
Decision pointPixel Watch 5 / Pixel Watch 4
Case and displayBoth: 45mm, 12.3mm thick, 36.7g without band; domed Always-On AMOLED, up to 3,000-nit peak brightness.
Processing and storageW5 Gen 2 Accelerated, 64GB / W5 Gen 2, 32GB. Available storage is lower than the nominal capacity.
GPSBoth dual-frequency. Watch 5 adds Google's newer route-correction approach; this is not a switch from single-band GPS.
Battery claimBoth 45mm models: up to 40 hours with Always-On display, or 72 hours in Battery Saver. Settings and use change the result.
Charging claimBoth 45mm specification sheets: about 30 minutes to 80%, 60 minutes to full on the Quick Charge Dock.
Phone requirementWatch 5: Android 12 or newer / Watch 4: Android 11 or newer. Neither supports iPhone.
Linked Amazon bundleWatch 5: Matte Black case, Obsidian Active Band 2nd gen / Watch 4: Satin Moonstone case, Moonstone Active Band. Both include small/large band sections and dock.
Important omissionNeither linked Wi-Fi model has standalone LTE or Satellite SOS. Choose an eligible LTE model if those are essential.

Design and comfort: choose size before generation

The matched 45mm cases have the same published dimensions and weight. Watch 5 changes the Active Band material to HNBR; Watch 4 uses fluoroelastomer. That is a material difference, not proof that everyone will find the newer band more comfortable.

Both generations also offer 41mm versions. They are worth considering for smaller wrists, but their stated Always-On endurance drops to 30 hours. Do not buy the larger watch purely for battery if the fit is wrong. Both use Gorilla Glass 5, not sapphire.

GPS: a cleaner recorded route is not perfect live pace

Illustration of route records versus live pacing, not actual GPS tracks, Google app screens or a Decively test.

Google claims better route accuracy on Watch 5 using building models and atmospheric corrections. Treat the marketing comparison as a manufacturer claim, not proof of universal superiority.

TechRadar's Michael Sawh ran two short routes through London's difficult Canary Wharf GPS environment against Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro. Watch 5 produced particularly strong route traces, but still had trouble with pacing and some locations. Watch 4 was not in that test, so it does not quantify a direct 5-versus-4 advantage.

Sawh also describes correction happening largely after the workout through server processing. If your priority is reviewing a route afterward, this is promising. If you need stable instantaneous race pace, do not assume a tidy post-run map proves it.

Battery and charging: don't expect a generation-sized leap

Google's 45mm endurance and charging specifications are essentially unchanged. The small battery-capacity increase on Watch 5 does not come with a longer published Always-On runtime. Use the size-specific figures rather than a generic Amazon description.

In original tests, TechRadar reported roughly 25% drain during a 2.5-hour Watch 5 hike. Android Central's Michael Hicks measured 8–12% per hour across five Watch 4 dual-band GPS running/walking tests. These are different activities and settings, not a head-to-head battery contest. Streaming music and cellular use increased drain substantially in Hicks's LTE-model tests.

Plan regular top-ups on either model. Use the supplied Quick Charge Dock; Google's support documentation does not support reverse wireless charging from a Pixel phone.

Health tools: check what your Watch 4 already received

Both have ECG-compatible electrical sensors, optical heart-rate tracking, skin-temperature sensing and body-response tracking. In TechRadar's Watch 5 review, heart-rate readings were close to a Polar H10 reference, but that is one reviewer's experience—not a controlled accuracy comparison with Watch 4.

Google's 24 September update says monthly Health Guardian tools are rolling out free to Pixel Watch 3, 4 and 5, with first reports arriving in early October. The older launch article's 'coming soon' wording is not the whole current picture. These trend summaries provide wellness information, not real-time blood-pressure measurements or diagnoses.

Breathing Emergency Detection also supports Watch 4 and newer in selected European markets, including the UK. The current availability list does not include the US, Canada or Australia. It requires setup and suitable connectivity, cannot detect every emergency and is not a sleep-apnea monitor.

Gemini, subscriptions and support: check the small print

Watch 5's accelerated chip and 64GB storage are concrete upgrades; Gemini itself is not exclusive to it. Google announced newer proactive assistance, but functions depend on supported countries, languages, accounts and connectivity. TechRadar found useful assistance alongside inaccurate answers and tasks that still required returning to the phone.

Google Health Coach requires Premium, an eligible account and regional availability. Factor that ongoing cost into any coaching-based purchase. On-wrist guided strength training remains labelled 'coming soon' in the current launch documentation; this article does not promise it is installed today.

Google's current update table guarantees support through at least October 2029 for Watch 5 and October 2028 for Watch 4. That extra guaranteed year matters more if you plan to keep the watch for several years. It is not a promise that every future feature will reach either model.

Which one should you buy at today's price?

Pixel Watch 4 is the stronger discounted choice for Android users who want apps, payments, calls through their phone and everyday fitness tracking. A meaningful saving is worth taking when you will not use the newer processing or extra storage.

Pixel Watch 5 makes more sense at a small price premium for new buyers wanting the longer guaranteed support window, more room for apps/downloads and the newer GPS processing. Existing Watch 4 owners should first update their apps and check which features they already have.

Common buying questions

Is Pixel Watch 5 worth upgrading from Watch 4?

Usually only for a specific need, such as extra storage or newer route processing. The published 45mm battery claim and many health features are shared.

Does the Wi-Fi Pixel Watch have Satellite SOS?

No. Google's Satellite SOS documentation restricts it to supported Pixel Watch 4 LTE and Watch 5 LTE models and eligible regions.

Can I use Pixel Watch 5 with a Samsung phone or iPhone?

It works with most compatible Android phones running Android 12 or newer, including eligible Samsung phones. A Pixel phone is not required for basic pairing. It does not pair with iPhone; individual features have additional requirements.

Researched 14 October 2026. Decively has not physically tested these watches. Specifications are from Google; measured observations are attributed to original reviewers, whose protocols differ.
