The most useful tracker is the one attached to the thing you keep misplacing. For some people, that is a set of keys. For others, it is the suitcase they cannot see from the airport carousel. Start there, rather than buying a four-pack and figuring out the uses afterwards.

Quick verdict: AirTag 2 is worth shortlisting if you use a compatible Apple device and want help finding belongings. Buy one for a clear everyday job. If your original AirTags still do that job well, replacing them all is hard to justify. If you need live GPS tracking, choose a different type of device.

Apple claims up to 50% farther Precision Finding and improved Bluetooth reach. Those figures describe manufacturer comparisons, not a guaranteed distance in your house or measurements by Decively. The new tag keeps the same form factor and works with existing AirTag accessories. Apple’s explanation of the changes.

The practical question is simple: do you struggle to hear or locate the tag you already own? If not, a newer chip alone is a weak reason to replace it. Spend first on covering a genuinely unprotected item.

Check your iPhone before buying

CHECK FIRST

Pairing and improved finding are different requirements

A device that can register an AirTag is not automatically a device that gets its longest Precision Finding range.

Apple’s current setup instructions require iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later to add this generation. Some product specification pages still show broader 26.0 requirements; use the setup guidance and update your device before pairing. Apple’s current pairing requirements.

Apple lists expanded Precision Finding for iPhone Air and iPhone 15 or later, excluding iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e. Watch Precision Finding requires Series 9 or later, or Ultra 2 or later, with watchOS 26.2.1. These features vary by region. Compatibility footnotes / Ultra Wideband availability.

Do not buy it as an Android-owned tracker. Its setup and item-management experience is built around Apple devices. Android unwanted-tracking alerts are a safety feature, not equivalent ownership support. Apple’s product information.

Keys, luggage or a wallet: give it one clear job

EVERYDAY USE

Keys you keep misplacing

A sensible first tag if looking for keys regularly interrupts your day. Budget for a secure holder and attach it before you need it.

TRAVEL USE

A second clue about your suitcase

Useful for checking a bag’s reported location. Treat the result as additional information for your airline, not permission to enter baggage areas or a promise that your bag will be returned.

CHECK THE SHAPE

A wallet is a different problem

An 8 mm-thick round tag may be awkward in a slim wallet. Consider whether a card-shaped tracker would fit the thing you actually carry better.

Apple specifies a 31.9 mm diameter, 8 mm height and 11.8 g weight. IP67 resistance is a laboratory rating of up to one metre for 30 minutes; resistance can diminish with wear. It is not a reason to leave the tag submerged. Dimensions and resistance details.

An AirTag is not a live GPS tracker

Away from your phone, AirTag relies on nearby devices in Apple’s Find My network to relay its Bluetooth signal and location. That is different from a tracker with its own GPS and mobile connection. A location update depends on the environment; a map pin is not a promise of continuous movement tracking. How the Find My network works.

For luggage, pay attention to when the location was reported. An older update cannot tell you exactly where the bag is now. During a missing-baggage conversation, give the airline the relevant information and follow its recovery process.

Apple says Share Item Location can temporarily provide access to participating airlines, with sharing ending after recovery or expiring after seven days. Check whether your airline accepts it. Apple explicitly designs AirTag for objects, not people or pets. Location sharing and intended use.

What an independent hands-on review found

In John Velasco’s Tom’s Guide review, he placed the two generations together and checked them with an iPhone 17 Pro. His second-generation unit maintained Precision Finding to roughly 74 feet, compared with 50 feet for the original. He also found the speaker easier to hear.

Those are one reviewer’s results in one setting, not universal range figures or Decively testing. His criticism of replaceable-battery upkeep is useful too: a tracker needs a working battery when the item goes missing, not merely when you first set it up.

That makes our buying advice more modest than a spec-sheet headline: prioritise reliable setup and a maintenance habit, then decide whether the better nearby finding solves a problem for you.

Should you buy AirTag 2 or keep what you have?

BUY ONE FIRST

You have a clear use and compatible Apple hardware

Start with the keys or bag you most want to find. Check the pairing and precision-finding requirements before spending on several tags.

KEEP THE ORIGINAL

Your current tags already work well

Replace the battery and check the attachment. Upgrade selectively if louder sound or better nearby finding would address a recurring frustration.

CHOOSE ANOTHER FORMAT

Your phone, wallet or tracking needs do not fit

Look for an appropriate ecosystem, a thinner form factor or a GPS tracker. An inexpensive purchase is still wasted if it solves the wrong problem.

A good purchase starts with a job, a compatible device and a realistic expectation. Our buying-guide approach explains how we weigh those trade-offs.

AirTag 2: common buying questions

Does AirTag 2 work with Android?

It is not an Android-owned tracker. Choose a tracker designed for your phone’s ecosystem rather than treating safety alerts as setup support.

Is AirTag 2 good for checked luggage?

It can provide useful additional location information. Updates depend on nearby network devices, so it does not guarantee live tracking or baggage recovery.

Should I replace every original AirTag?

Not automatically. Start with the item where improved nearby finding would make a noticeable difference; keep tags that already serve their purpose.

Does the Amazon one-pack include a key ring?

Do not assume so. Apple’s box contents list the tag, installed battery and documentation. Check any bundle separately; the orange holder shown above is an accessory.

Can I recharge its battery?

No. It uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. Check battery status before relying on it for travel.
