If you have been wearing smartwatches for years, you know that touchscreens and sweaty fingers are a difficult combination. That is why Samsung's physical rotating bezel became a fan favorite. After a brief identity crisis in previous generations, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 Classic (2025) brings the tactile bezel back in a bold, heavy, and ultra-bright new package.

Featuring the new squircle cushion case inspired by the Ultra line, Google's Gemini AI baked directly into the OS, and a 3,000-nit display, it looks strong on paper. As with any smartwatch, the spec sheet does not tell the whole story. This review sets out what this 2025 flagship does well, where it falls short, and the ownership trade-offs to know before you choose.

Research-based review: this draws on published specifications and reporting, not Decively hands-on testing.

The Quick Verdict

What we like:

  • The rotating bezel: It remains the clearest way to navigate a smartwatch interface. The tactile clicks are precise and satisfying.
  • Gemini AI integration: Wear OS 6 replaces the aging Google Assistant with Gemini, making voice dictation and complex queries noticeably faster and more reliable.
  • Storage bump: With 64GB of onboard storage, offline Spotify playlists and podcasts have room to live on the watch.
  • Display brightness: The 1.34-inch AMOLED display now hits 3,000 nits, which makes it easier to read in direct sunlight.

The trade-offs to consider:

  • It is heavy: At 63.5g without the strap and 10.6mm thick, you will feel this on your wrist. It is bulky for sleep tracking.
  • Proprietary strap system: The new Dynamic Lug system makes swapping bands easier, but it breaks compatibility with older Galaxy Watch bands.
  • Ecosystem lock-in: ECG and blood pressure still require a Samsung Galaxy phone. You also have to juggle three apps to manage the watch.
  • Average battery life: Despite the 3nm Exynos W1000 chip, real-world reports still land around 30 to 40 hours.

Design and Build: A Statement Piece

Samsung is leaning heavily into the traditional-watch aesthetic this year. The stainless steel cushion case gives the Watch 8 Classic a sophisticated, aggressive look that stands out among generic round and square smartwatches.

That premium build comes at a cost. This is a chunky device. The watch is only available in one 46mm size, which can overwhelm smaller wrists. The bezel ring is prominent enough to restrict the screen to 1.34 inches. You are trading screen size for tactile control and screen protection.

Software and Health Tracking: The Gemini Era

Running on Wear OS 6 and One UI 8 Watch, the interface is the smoothest Samsung has produced. The new Now Bar is a useful addition: timers, music, and active workouts can be reached from the bottom of the watch face without digging through menus.

On the health side, Samsung adds metrics such as Antioxidant Index and Vascular Load, alongside ECG and body composition (BIA). Dual-frequency L1+L5 GPS is the stronger option for runs in dense cities. Serious athletes may find the new Running Coach too basic, because it is aimed mainly at beginners.

Note for non-Samsung users: If you pair this watch with a Pixel or OnePlus phone, ECG and blood pressure are not available.

Battery Life: The Daily Routine

If you were hoping the 2025 model would finally bring multi-day battery life to the Classic line, you will be slightly disappointed.

Samsung claims up to 40 hours of use, or 30 hours with the Always-On Display (AOD) enabled. Published accounts that include GPS workouts and sleep tracking point to charging about every 1.5 days. A full charge takes about 90 minutes via the magnetic puck, which is adequate but lags behind the faster charging seen on some competitors.

Should You Buy It?

The Galaxy Watch 8 Classic is built for a specific kind of owner.

If you own a Samsung smartphone, like the look of a heavy, mechanical-style timepiece, and want the tactile click of a rotating bezel, this is the strongest Wear OS case for that brief right now.

If you want a lightweight fitness tracker for sleep, or you use a non-Samsung Android phone, the weight, battery, and software lock-ins make the standard Galaxy Watch 8 or the Pixel Watch the more practical alternatives.
