Amazfit Active 3 Premium vs Active 2 is mainly a choice between extra running tools and a lighter everyday watch. This comparison uses the Active 2 Round Premium: it already has sapphire glass, offline maps and Bluetooth calls. The Square model is different.

Quick verdict: which watch makes sense?

Buy Active 3 Premium for four-button control and more running/navigation tools. Buy Active 2 Round Premium for its lighter, slimmer body when it is substantially cheaper. Existing Active 2 owners should upgrade for a specific useful feature, not sapphire they already have.

Neither is a dual-band GPS upgrade. Contactless payments depend on the regional model and supported cards.

Fit and controls matter more than the brightness headline

Active 3 has four buttons; Active 2 has two and is smaller and lighter. Both screens share the same size and resolution. The 3,000-nit figure is a manufacturer peak claim, unavailable below 30% battery, rather than a permanent brightness level.

Both linked Premium watches already have sapphire glass. For swimming, replace Active 2’s leather strap with its included sport strap.

Running and accuracy: more metrics are not better measurements

Active 3 adds lactate-threshold, running-power and ground-contact-time tools. Active 2 already provides Zepp Coach, training load and recovery time. Both support external Bluetooth heart-rate sensors. Pay for data you will use to guide training.

Wareable found Active 3 adequate for most runs, but reported distance drift and weaker wrist heart-rate tracking during hard intervals. Notebookcheck’s separate standard Active 2 Round test found a 3.77% average cycling heart-rate deviation against a Polar H10. Different protocols and variants prevent a direct accuracy ranking.

Both use single-band positioning: multiple satellite systems do not mean dual-frequency GPS. For hard intervals, a chest strap may help more than changing watches. Recovery and wellness scores remain estimates.

Offline maps: useful, but prepare the route first

Illustration of map and route preparation, not Zepp screenshots or a watch navigation test.

Both show downloaded maps and guide imported routes phone-free. Active 3 has 4GB storage, and Amazfit’s current page lists POI search, round-trip planning and rerouting.

Its footnote still requires the correct map area and an imported route, with navigation limited to outdoor sport modes. Update firmware and test your route before leaving. A straight-line return indicator does not guarantee a usable path.

Battery life: compare settings, not just the biggest number

Amazfit's maximum claims; workloads and settings affect real endurance
Decision pointActive 3 Premium / Active 2 Round
Typical useUp to 12 days / up to 10 days
Heavy useUp to 7 days / up to 5 days
Continuous GPSUp to 24 hours / up to 21 hours

Tom’s Guide reached eight days with 6% remaining on Active 3 during daily activity and feature testing. Wareable observed 5–6% loss per running hour in its best GPS mode. Notebookcheck got three to four days from Active 2 with all measurements and always-on display enabled. These were not matched workloads, so they cannot establish a battery winner.

Active 3’s separate 76-hour power-saving GPS claim disables functions including heart-rate monitoring. Compare normal recording modes instead.

Calls, replies and Zepp Pay: check your phone and region

Both work with Android and iPhone through Zepp, and Bluetooth calls require a connected phone. WhatsApp speech-to-text replies require Android; iPhone users should not assume identical replies. Zepp Flow varies by language and region. Neither has an Apple Watch/Wear OS app ecosystem.

Zepp Pay covers the UK and selected European countries with eligible NFC models and participating cards or Curve. A US Amazon listing does not guarantee European payment capability: verify the regional SKU and bank.

Active 3 cannot install Spotify directly. Its US page still marks podcast support as a future update. Core workout data is subscription-free; optional services can cost extra.

Which should you buy at today's price?

At a small price gap, Active 3 Premium is easier to justify for runners who will use the controls and new training/navigation tools. A substantially cheaper Active 2 Premium remains a sensible everyday choice; its lighter body is an advantage.

Existing owners should keep Active 2 unless a specific upgrade matters. Compare the same region and delivered cost. Read our Active 2 review or best-value smartwatch guide for alternatives.

Questions before buying

Is Active 2 Premium the same as Active 2 Square?

No. This article links the round Black Leather Premium two-strap bundle. Check the case shape and listing.
