Quick verdict: buy for better Atmos, not the badge
The Sonos Beam Ultra makes sense for a compact TV setup where convincing height effects and clearer dialogue matter. Keep a satisfactory Beam Gen 2 if most of your viewing is ordinary TV or your placement blocks the top of the bar. The biggest compromise is the total cost: the soundbar price does not include a subwoofer, rear speakers or its new wall mount.

Beam Ultra vs Beam Gen 2: what actually changes?
Conceptual sound paths, not measured coverage. Beam Ultra adds physical upward-firing drivers.
Released on September 29, 2026, Beam Ultra’s main upgrade is physical upward-firing drivers rather than height effects created only through processing. Sonos describes its presentation as 7.1.2 Atmos; that does not mean separate rear speakers or a subwoofer come in the box.
| Check | What changes |
|---|---|
| Height effects | Gen 2 uses virtual height. Ultra adds two upward-firing tweeters. |
| Drivers | Gen 2: five. Ultra: nine. Driver count alone does not measure sound quality. |
| Width | Gen 2: 651 mm. Ultra: 750 mm (29.53 in). |
| Music streaming | Both support Wi-Fi and AirPlay 2. Ultra adds Bluetooth audio. |
| Optical TV | Gen 2 includes an optical adapter. Ultra requires a separately purchased adapter. |
There are also four levels of AI Speech Enhancement and Night Sound for quieter viewing. Trueplay room tuning works with Android and iOS, although the guide distinguishes quick tuning from the iOS-based advanced procedure.

What independent listening tests found
TechRadar’s Harry Padoan reported convincing height effects, a broader presentation and strong dialogue during his week with the bar. That supports the upgrade argument for Atmos films; it is a listening impression in his room, not a guarantee for yours.
Jonathan Bray at Expert Reviews also heard more separation and stronger low-end definition than Beam Gen 2. However, he found some stereo music harder-edged and questioned the asking price. Those findings point toward movie viewing as the stronger reason to buy, rather than replacing a dedicated stereo system.
These are early reviews. Long-term reliability and software stability remain open questions this close to launch.
Will your TV actually deliver Dolby Atmos?
Connect source devices to the TV. Atmos also depends on the source, service and TV passthrough.
Beam Ultra has one HDMI ARC/eARC connection and no HDMI passthrough input for a console or streaming box. Connect those devices to your TV, then connect the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the bar.
ARC can carry Dolby Digital Plus Atmos if your TV supports passing it through. eARC is required for Dolby TrueHD Atmos and Dolby MAT, the format used for Atmos by devices such as Apple TV. An Atmos-labelled app or film alone does not prove the whole chain works.
Optical is a fallback for older TVs, using a separately sold adapter, but it does not deliver Atmos. Check the format shown in the Sonos app’s Now Playing screen. DTS Digital Surround support should not be confused with DTS:X support.

Check the gap above the soundbar
Sonos specifies at least 10 cm (4 in) above the bar when placed below a TV. Diagram is not to scale.
The upward-firing drivers need a clear path. Sonos specifies at least 10 cm (4 in) between the bar’s top and the bottom of a TV when placing it below the screen, and advises against enclosing it in a cabinet.
With less clearance, Sonos recommends Simulated Overhead Sound. That is a workaround using simulated height, so a cramped shelf can reduce the practical benefit you are paying for.
An existing Beam Gen 2 wall mount cannot be reused. Sonos specifies the dedicated Beam Ultra Wall Mount, sold separately; Arc and Arc Ultra mounts are incompatible too.

Value depends on the gap to the alternatives
On October 5, 2026, official Sonos listings showed US$699, £699 in the UK, CA$949 and AU$1,099 for the bar. These are dated manufacturer listings, not live Amazon prices or a promise of your final checkout cost. Local offers, taxes and availability vary.
If a discounted Beam Gen 2 already solves your problem, the Ultra premium needs a clear reason: better Atmos height, dialogue controls or Bluetooth playback. For a larger room and a wider TV console, compare Arc Ultra before spending more on Beam Ultra plus accessories; Arc Ultra is much wider at 1,178 mm, so measure first.
Price the system, not just the bar: add any mount or adapter you need, then decide whether a subwoofer or rears are actually necessary. Buy on the features available now. Sonos says Alexa+ is planned for Beam Ultra, but it was not available at launch and should not be a purchasing assumption.

Who should buy it — and who should keep looking?
Consider Beam Ultra
You want a compact Atmos upgrade, have a suitable TV and clear placement, and value a Sonos system that can expand later.
Keep looking
You need HDMI passthrough, already like your Gen 2, have a blocked shelf, or would rather buy a complete system within the same budget.
Our recommendation: Beam Ultra is a meaningful compact upgrade, but the room and TV connection should earn it a place on your shortlist before the new-model appeal does.
Questions worth settling before checkout
Does Beam Ultra work with an older TV?
Yes, through ARC or a separately purchased optical adapter. The TV’s output determines the formats you can receive; optical will not provide Atmos.
Can it play music from a phone?
Yes. Bluetooth audio and AirPlay 2 are supported, alongside Sonos Wi-Fi streaming. Initial setup still requires the Sonos app and a suitable network.
Do you need extra speakers?
No. It can be used alone. A compatible subwoofer or rear speakers are optional purchases, not part of the advertised single-bar package.
