The laser vs ink tank printer decision starts with what you actually print. The Brother HL-L2460DW is a monochrome, print-only laser. The Epson EcoTank ET-2900 adds color, scanning and copying with refillable ink. Buying the wrong type matters more than choosing the faster specification.
Quick verdict: Brother or Epson for your home?
Choose Brother for documents, automatic double-sided printing and weeks between print jobs. Choose Epson if you regularly need color worksheets, family photos or a flatbed scanner. Epson's low-cost refill system is useful only if its capabilities and your printing pattern justify the purchase.

Laser vs ink tank printer: the practical differences
| Decision point | Brother / Epson |
|---|---|
| Printing tasks | Brother: black-and-white printing only. Epson: color printing, scanning and copying. |
| Double-sided printing | Brother: automatic. Epson: manual sheet flipping through the driver. |
| Paper input | Brother: 250-sheet tray. Epson: 100-sheet tray. |
| Advertised speed | Brother: up to 36 ppm, single-sided. Epson: 11 black / 6 color ISO ppm. Different stated test conditions; not a matched benchmark. |
| Connections | Both: USB, Wi-Fi, AirPrint and mobile apps. Brother also includes Ethernet. |
| Consumables | Brother: TN830-family toner plus separate DR830 drum. Epson: US 522 ink bottles and a maintenance box. |
| Included supply | Brother: approximately 700-page starter toner. Epson: up to three years of ink under its stated usage assumptions. |
Neither is a document-scanning workstation: Brother has no scanner; Epson's flatbed requires placing pages individually, without an automatic document feeder.
Documents only, or color and scanning?
Illustration of printing needs, not a product photograph or output-quality test of either printer.
For invoices, shipping documents and text worksheets, Brother avoids paying for color features you will not use. Automatic duplex saves manually turning a stack of pages. For a household printing school projects or copying forms, Epson's scanner and color capability solve jobs Brother cannot do.
Do not pick Epson solely to get a scanner if you need to digitize long documents regularly. A flatbed is convenient for individual pages and photos, but slow for stacks.
Brother HL-L2460DW: better for occasional mono printing
Brother is the stronger fit when a printer may sit unused for weeks and then print a document batch. Toner does not have liquid ink to dry in a printhead. Its 250-sheet tray and automatic duplex also suit a document-heavy home office.
RTINGS' firsthand review found crisp, legible text and high page yields, while noting some warm-up delay and the missing scanner. Those findings support its document role; they do not make it a color or photo printer.
Epson ET-2900: better for regular color printing
Choose the black ET-2900 for color assignments, everyday photos and occasional scan-and-copy jobs. Its refillable tanks reduce dependence on small ink cartridges. It accepts Epson's US 522 bottles; this is not the older ET-2800 that Amazon may show through local matching.
The important compromise is manual duplex. You also give up Brother's Ethernet connection and larger paper tray. No credible firsthand ET-2900 performance test was identified in this research, so its quoted speed and ink figures remain Epson's claims, not Decively measurements.
Running costs: compare the whole purchase
Use printer price + replacement supplies + maintenance, not the cheapest refill alone. For Brother, budget for toner and eventually a separate drum. Its supplied starter toner is rated for about 700 pages; a TN830XL replacement is rated for approximately 3,000, under ISO test conditions.
Epson's 'up to three years of ink' assumes roughly 100 document pages per month. It is not a guarantee for photo-heavy use. Initial setup and maintenance consume ink, and color ink may be used even for grayscale jobs. A maintenance box is another consumable.
EcoTank can make sense for regular color printing. For a few monochrome pages each month, lower refill cost may never offset a higher purchase price. Check current Amazon prices for both printers and their genuine supplies before deciding.
Before checkout: exact models and compatibility
These links identify the US HL-L2460DW and black ET-2900. Amazon's local matching showed an HL-L2400DW and ET-2800 in the UK during this check. Those are different models; do not carry over US speeds, connectivity or ink compatibility. Confirm the delivered model, voltage, warranty and supplies for your country.
For Mac users, Brother specifies AirPrint rather than a dedicated Mac printer driver. Epson offers its Smart Panel mobile app; verify the latest desktop software for your operating system. Brother's Refresh toner subscription is optional: review its terms if you choose to enroll.

Home-printer questions
Is laser or ink tank better if I rarely print?
For occasional black-and-white documents, the Brother laser is the more straightforward choice. An ink tank still needs printhead care; choose Epson when regular color printing or its scanner is genuinely useful.
Does the Epson ET-2900 print double-sided automatically?
No. Its driver supports manual double-sided printing, requiring you to turn the sheets. The Brother HL-L2460DW handles duplex automatically.
Is the Brother HL-L2460DW cheaper to run?
Not for every workload. Compare toner and drum costs with Epson's ink and maintenance costs, and include the purchase price. Brother cannot meet a color-printing requirement at any per-page cost.
