Garmin Forerunner 170 vs 165: Is the New Running Watch Worth It?

The Forerunner 170 adds useful training analysis, but the 165 still covers the running essentials. Here is when the newer watch earns its premium.

The Garmin Forerunner 170 vs 165 decision comes down to training guidance and the price gap. The newer watch adds recovery and training-load analysis; it does not bring a bigger screen or multi-band GPS. This comparison covers the standard editions linked below, not the separate Music models.

Quick verdict: which Forerunner should you buy?

Choose the Forerunner 170 if you want Training Readiness and Training Status to help interpret recovery and your recent training. Choose the Forerunner 165 if you mainly need pace, distance, suggested runs and recovery time, and it is substantially cheaper. Already own a 165? Keep it unless those extra training tools solve a real need.

Neither standard model stores music for phone-free listening. Neither is the right upgrade for someone specifically seeking multi-band GPS, full onboard maps or a dedicated triathlon mode.

What does the Forerunner 170 add for training?

Training Readiness combines sleep, HRV, recovery time, acute load and recent stress into a daily training score. Training Status interprets how your training is affecting fitness. The practical benefit is context: should today's hard session go ahead, and is your recent workload moving in the right direction? These are Garmin estimates, not injury-prevention guarantees.

The 165 already offers daily suggested workouts, Garmin Coach, HRV status and post-workout recovery time. You do not need the newer model just to follow a 5K or half-marathon plan. The 170 also adds Quick Workouts, which create a session from your available time and chosen intensity, and a refreshed interface.

If you follow a coach's plan and rarely consult readiness scores, the extra analysis may add little. Do not buy either watch on an assumed promise of future software features; Garmin has not provided a model-specific support end date in the sources checked.

GPS and heart-rate accuracy: do not pay for an assumed upgrade

Illustration of GPS reception environments, not a Garmin tracking test.

Both watches use single-frequency GPS and Garmin's Elevate Gen 4 heart-rate sensor. The Run Testers found the 170's GPS tracks competitive with their Forerunner 970 and COROS PACE 4, and its heart-rate readings close to a chest strap during their runs. That supports its usefulness, not a proven accuracy advantage over the 165.

The5krunner's separate testing showed good direct 170 results on open and suburban routes, but less dependable tracks near tall buildings and an underpass. Some other sessions in that review used a Forerunner 70 as a proxy after 170 recordings were lost; those are not direct 170 measurements.

For ordinary road running, either can be a sensible choice. If difficult city routes are your main concern, prioritize a watch with multi-band GPS rather than assuming the newer number fixes reception. Neither includes full onboard maps: breadcrumb guidance shows a course to follow, not a detailed street map.

Battery life: the newer watch does not win every mode

Garmin's maximum battery claims, not matched real-world test results
Decision pointForerunner 170 / Forerunner 165
Smartwatch modeUp to 10 days / up to 11 days
GPS-only recordingUp to 20 hours / up to 19 hours
All-systems GNSSUp to 14 hours / up to 17 hours

The mode matters: the 170 gains one claimed GPS-only hour, while the 165 has the higher all-systems figure. Garmin also rates the 170 at up to four days with its display always on.

The Run Testers reported roughly 3.5 days with always-on display and daily running. The5krunner estimated 18.75 GPS hours from two continuous-recording sessions, but could not confirm which satellite mode was active. These workloads are different, so neither number establishes a battery winner in a matched comparison. Expect GPS use, display settings and monitoring to change charging frequency.

Phone compatibility, Garmin Pay and the Music trap

Both work with compatible iPhones and Android phones through Garmin Connect. Standard text-notification quick replies require a compatible Android phone; iPhone users should not expect the same reply feature. Neither standard watch provides wrist-based voice calling.

Garmin Pay depends on your country, bank and card, even though both watches have the feature. For Spotify or other downloaded audio without your phone, choose the Music edition and check the service's subscription requirements. The two Amazon listings here are non-Music models; controlling your phone's music is a different capability.

When is the extra cost worth it?

Compare the same edition, seller terms and delivered cost. A small premium makes the 170's added training tools easier to justify. A large gap favors the 165 if you will not use them. A discounted 165 Music can also be a better fit than a standard 170 when phone-free audio matters more than readiness scores.

Our recommendation: buy the 170 for training analysis you intend to use; buy the 165 for the essentials at a meaningfully lower price. Existing 165 owners have little reason to upgrade for the display or tracking hardware alone. If you are buying your first running watch, compare the Forerunner 70 vs 170 before paying for extras. Questions before buying

Is the Forerunner 165 still worth buying in 2026?

Yes, when its price is meaningfully lower and you do not need Training Readiness or Training Status. Its AMOLED screen, GPS and guided running features still cover the essentials.

Is Forerunner 170 GPS more accurate than the 165?

There is no demonstrated hardware upgrade here: both lack multi-band GPS. Independent 170 tests are encouraging, but the sources checked do not establish a consistent head-to-head advantage.

Can either linked watch play music without a phone?

No. These are standard editions. Downloaded music requires a Forerunner 165 Music or 170 Music, with a subscription where the selected music service requires one.
